Big Ice

Like the majority of Porteños, we too cleared out of Buenos Aires in January. Armed with guidebooks and backpacks we had 17 days to check out southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. Here's a map of our trip:

Our first stop, El Calafate, a town in the southern Patagonia province of Santa Cruz which acts mainly as the staging area for outdoor enthusiasts heading off to various points within Parque Nacional Los Glaciares.

About an hour and a half outside of Calafate is one of the country's major attractions, Glaciar Perito Moreno.

60 meters high and surprisingly blue, this gigantic ice field was a spectacular sight.

Although not everyone was as impressed as we were. We overheard one young American traveler declare that the glacier was about as exciting as a popcicle.

While we didn't witness any major icebergs fall from the face of the glacier, the small pieces that did fall during our visit made thunderous, cracking sounds and gigantic splashes.

The only sight more impressive to Trevor during this stop in El Calafate was the group of tourists staying in our hotel. They were cruising through Patagonia on these BMW bikes.
