Apologies to two of my best friends Manuel Canut and Cristina Limas-Villers. But WOW, those Brazilians can really play the futbol.
Argentina had trounced
Mexico, Paraguay, and the USA on their way to the 2007 Copa America final in Venezuela. However, on Sunday night
Argentina met her match against the understaffed Brazilian selection.
Brazil left their best player in Barcelona and had already lost to Mexico in this tournament. Then in the Championship against Argentina they proved the Law of Futbol Sudamericano, as expressed by my friend Matias:
“Futbol es Futbol, y Brazil es Brazil”
He told me this immediately after reminding me that Brazil is not Mexico.
Sarah and I watched the Copa America championship game in an Irish pub in Bariloche, Argintina. We had heard that this tourist ski town fills up with Brazilians during winter’s peak season. I expected Brazilian fans to make a good showing at the local pub, but I was impressed by their dominance.
We were two of four four people rooting for Argentina in the most popular bar in Argentina’s most important ski area.
Kasey Keller (USA goalkeeper) once complained that playing Guatemala in RFK stadium in Washington DC was like a road game. The ratio of Guatemalan fans to USA fans was in the neighborhood of 70/30.
Watching this championship match in a bar in Argentina was the same. Except that in Washington the predominant language was Spanish. Here in Argentina, it was Portuguese.
This was our first real futbol experience. Watching a Brazilian team without its stars dismantle Argentina, we learned a little about the beautiful game they play.
That said, American football is still the only real football.

Hello Trev, sounds like I missed a good futboll game and probably tones of good coktails. It is too bad that when the south American futboll ventures to Europe, it can't come toghether to beat teams like "France" ;). Hope the snow and montain was good, where are the pics... Did you end up buying a new board?
